What data does the VOC Atlas contain?

At its core, the VOC Atlas is Owlstone Medical’s rich repository of breath-related VOCs and the context in which they have been found. This includes subject and compound metadata with links to associated literature.


The Atlas is comprised of only the highest quality breath data. This means that we only display VOCs that have been identified against pure chemical standards, differentiated from background contamination (i.e. determined as on-breath) in at least one study, and produced by a validated and quantitative analytical method.


We intend to allow externally generated feature tables to be uploaded in the future, including those using other sampling and analytical techniques.

Validate your research findings. VOC Atlas provides compound identities that have been validated against analytical standards, giving you confidence in the reported molecules and facilitating reliable comparisons across studies.

Verify Compound Concentrations:

Compare your findings to reference ranges: VOC Atlas offers breath concentration data derived from calibration curves, allowing you to strengthen the interpretation of your own findings. Understand the likely utility of breath sensors by referencing the typical VOC concentrations found on breath in the VOC Atlas.

Can I submit my data to the VOC Atlas?

Please contact us if you want to publish your data on Atlas. 

The majority of data currently in the VOC Atlas is from Owlstone Medical-run breath studies. However, we are always interested in speaking to partners with relevant data and may allow users to upload their own datasets in the future.
